Brief

To create a garden on a very steep site with an emphasis on opening up access from the house to the garden and utilising as much level space as possible.

Solution

We established several flat garden and lawn areas with stepped retaining using mudstone boulders The only views from the back of the house were of a very high existing treated pine sleeper wall which we cut down in height to reduce the claustrophobic conditions. We created visual impact by cladding the existing walls with folded mild steel sheets, feature steel spines and clever lighting. We also removed a section of the retaining wall to open up access to the new garden by building a series of grand rock steps and landings. The existing bessa block retaining wall in the entertaining area was disguised with peninsular blend walling stone.
