Steep backyards are challenging – but this project proves they can be absolutely stunning. Instead of fighting the slope, this design works with it, creating a beautiful multi-level garden that’s easy to access and a joy to explore.

The garden flows naturally down the hillside with weathered timber beds and big boulders creating cozy pockets at different levels. Gravel pathways and stone steps wind through the space, inviting you to wander and discover new views. It’s practical too—the slope helps water drain away, and the boulders prevent erosion while looking great doing it.

The plants are selected to thrive on slopes with minimal fussing. Golden and silver-toned grasses sway in the breeze, purple flowering herbs buzz with bees, and scattered trees provide shady spots and natural framing. Mix in the warm tones of natural stone and weathered wood, and you get a garden that feels both modern and completely at home in the landscape.
